What is Troop Committee?

One of the parents of our new Scouts suggested that I address “What is Troop Committee?”

Troop Committee is the governing organization for the Scout Troop and the Venture Crew (for our older Scouts) and provides the framework that the scouting organization operates under.

Troop Committee meets each month, usually on the 3rd Monday evening. If there is no Troop meeting on the 3th Monday, we move the Troop Committee one week so that we always meet from 7:30 PM until about 9:00 PM during a Troop meeting.

Usually about a dozen adults are present.

Troop committee discusses the money and equipment that we need to provide the program that we provide for Scouts, including the monthly outing, the annual summer camp, and our special outings (this summer we have several Scouts on their way to the 100th Anniversary National Scout Jamboree).

In addition, troop committee provides oversight of how the Troop is carrying out it’s program (are adult leaders being trained?, are scouts advancing?, are we following the rules and filling out the required paperwork?, etc.) Troop committee schedules and coordinates our recognition of Scouts – our Courts of Honor – a few times a year.

As the Scoutmaster, I am responsible to Troop Committee and rely on Troop Committee to be able to conduct a quality program for the Scouts. I attend at least a part of each Troop Committee meeting to report on our activities and answer any questions that Troop Committee may have about our activities.

Parents are always welcome to attend and encouraged to participate, whether by attending a few meeting to observe or to take on (or share) one of the ongoing roles. We are all parents, doing this in our “spare” time, because we value the program and want it to suceed and to be available to as may Scouts as possible.

March Outing

For our March “Welcome Weekend” outing, we’ll be traveling to Camp Lakota, near Defiance, Ohio.

We will be leaving after work on Friday, March 12 – meeting at the church at 5:30 PM and driving the 140 miles to the camp where we will be staying in a cabin.

Saturday, after a hearty breakfast, we’ll spend the day welcoming our newest Scouts and working on advancement skills.

We will be returning on Sunday around noon.

The cost for the outing will be $18. In addition to their other camping gear (remember to consult your Boy Scout Handbook) Scouts should bring a sleeping bag and a pad. Tents will not be needed.

Scouts should bring warm clothes, as we will be outside for most of the day on Saturday.

Remember that we travel in our “Class A” uniforms.

Please let me know if there are quesitons.

One of our Eagle Scouts

Chris O’Keefe earned his Eagle rank with the troop in 2005.

What he has undertaken and achieved since then and what he is undertaking now is remarkable.

I spoke about it to the Scouts in Monday’s Scoutmaster Minute, but his story is told more clearly in this Suburban News article that ran in multiple local newspapers.

There is a link to Chris’ website here.

And it’s possible to follow his progress, as he hikes the length of the Appalachian Trail (2,178 miles) to raise funds and awareness for Sudan at his blog.

Scout Sunday at BUMC

Scout Sunday will be celebrated on this Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010 at Bexley United Methodist Church during the 10:30 AM traditional service. The church would like for Troop 166 Scouts to participate in the service as greeters to stand in the entry ways to the sanctuary to greet folks and hand out bulletins; ushers to collect the offering by passing the offering plates; and the read the scripture lesson for the day from the lecturn. The chrurch will provide me with the reading for the day once the pastor has made the selection.

If I can provide the names of the Scouts, they will be printed in the church bulletin.

Scouts will need to be at the church at 10 AM on Sunday for for a brief overview of instruction on Sunday, Feb. 7.

This is an important expression of our thanks to our charting organization and a recognition of the role of the 12th point of the Scout law (Reverance).

Please let me know if there are questions.

February Outing

In February, the Troop returns to the outdoors for a day of downhill skiing, snowboarding and tubing.

Simon Kenton Council has arranged a special day of fun at Mad River Mountain near Bellefontaine, OH on Saturday, February 6.

We’ll be leaving early in the morning on Saturday (arrive at church at 7 AM, we’ll leave as soon as we’re all there – by 7:30 AM) and returning in the afternoon.

The cost will be $25 + $10 for equipment rental (if needed for skiing or snowboarding) + $3 transportation.

That’s $38 with ski or snowboard rental, $28 is you are tubing or already have skiing/snowboarding equipment.

Permission slips will be available at Monday’s Troop meeting.

You can read more about the event here.

Free Test Prep Software for Scout Families

From the Simon Kenton Council website:

“Free SAT/ACT software now available for Boy Scout families… In alliance with the Boy Scouts of America, eKnowledge is offering SAT and ACT test prep programs valued at $200, free to Boy Scout families.

“EKnowledge recently announced the arrival of the new v6x SAT/ACT PowerPrep™ software; v6x was in development for more than two years at a cost of $1.5 million. It includes more than 20 hours of video instruction, 3,000 files of supplemental test prep material, thousands of interactive diagnostic tools, sample questions, practice tests, and graphic teaching illustrations. The new PowerPrep™ v6x software is Mac- and PC-compatible.

“Families interested in obtaining the FREE $200 v6x SAT/ACT PowerPrep™ Programs may order online at www.eknowledge.com/bsa or by calling 951-256-4076.

“There is a fee of $13.84 (per standard program) which enables eKnowledge to provide technical and customer support, registration, licensure, processing, handling, and worldwide shipping. This nominal fee allows the sponsorship alliance to continue helping thousands of students each year.”

Note that the fee is $13.84 per program – ACT and SAT count as two programs so the fee is twice that for both. Also there is a note on the ordering form that “The donated PowerPrep SAT and/or ACT programs come with a one year renewable license. This allows the student to prepare for their exam for an entire year. You may qualify…to extend your license for one (1) additional year, for a minimal fee.”

January Outing

Our new year of outings begins with a trip to Camp Oyo near Portsmouth on Friday, January 22 where we will will have a cabin available to us for Friday and Saturday nights.

During the day on Saturday, Scouts will construct shelters with the goal of spending the night outdoors without a tent on Saturday night.

The cabin will proivde a warm place to cook, relax, recharge, play games and get warm. The cabin also provides a safe fall-back position if spending the night outdoors proves too challenging.

The cost for the outing will be $18.

We will meet at the church at 5:30 PM for a 6:00 PM departature.

Please review the weather for the weekend and dress accordingly.

Also take a look at the other posts here about dressing and planning for outdoor activities in the cold.
