Backpacker Magazine Article on Cold Weather Camping

Just in time for our January outing, Backpacker magazine has a series of articles about cold weather camping. A good place to start is the winter camping checklist, found here:

Backpacker Magazine

This site is linked to other sites on winter camping, so you should be able to find out anything needed.

(Note of caution: Backpacker magazine is for serious gear-hounds, so don’t worry if you don’t plan to bring everything they describe–it’s just to give you some ideas!)

“Thank you” from Bexley Rec

Another “thank-you” note to share:

IMG_4454-1

Dear Volunteers:

On behalf of the Bexley Recreation and Parks Dept. and Bexley Historical Society, thank you all so much for your help in pulling of one of the most successful Pancake Breakfast ever. The event was a huge success on a number of levels. Attendance was high, feedback has been great, and there was very little waiting in line. Because of all of the wonderful volunteers (You all), the pancake breakfast was another successful community event. In my field, there truly is nothing better then seeing the community come together to enjoy each others company. In the process we were also able to raise a few dollars for the Historical Society and Bexley Recreation and Parks Youth Scholarship Fund.

Thank you all again for all of your efforts, and we hope to see you back again next year.

Michael Price
Recreation & Parks Director

Philmont 2011

I announced this at our Troop meeting this evening, but I wanted to send an email to let anyone who wasn’t able to make it hear the news, since we will not be meeting again until next year.

Our application for Philmont 2011 was a success! We have a reservation for two crews for Philmont for July 29 through Aug 10, 2011. Although details will need to be extensively worked out, this likely means we will depart Columbus early on July 28 and return late on Aug 10. Please stay tuned for details…

BTW, I also wanted to mention that we have room for additional Scouts/adults on the crews, so if you are eligible (age 14 or older or completed 8th grade by summer 2011) and want to go, please let me know, and questions are always welcome.

Philmont 2011–WOO HOO!!!

Mr. K.

Scouts will be earning service hours for this event.

The event is scheduled from 8:30 AM until 11:30 AM.

BTW (By the way) this is the say day as the first day of our two-day December outing – our annual Movies/Planning outing. We will be leaving for the outing in the afternoon – after the Pancake Breakfast.

Two events in one day. Wow!

December Outing

Our December outing will be our annual Planning/Movie outing.

We will weet at Bexley United Methodist Church at 3 PM on Saturday, December 12 and travel to Camp Lazarus near Delaware Ohio. We will be leaving after participating in the Pancake Breakfast on Saturday morning. We will spend the night in Exchange Lodge and return on Sunday December 13 at about noon. Bring sleeping bags and pads as we will be sleeping on the floor of the heated lodge.

There is no cost to the Scouts for this outing.

We will be watching movies, playing indoor and outdoor games and planning outings for the coming year.

Parents are welcome and encouraged to come for the evening session or to spend the night and to observe the Scout-led planning process.

All suggestions about activities or destinations or potential conflicts that limit participation on a particular weekend next year are welcome.

Now is the time to offer your ideas.

Please submit your ideas and suggestions to me so that we can get them on to the list for consideration.
