May 2012 Troop Outing – Canoeing and Fishing

Our next outing is coming up this weekend and we seem to have most of the details ironed out.

The Troop will meet at the church on this Friday, May 18 at 6 PM, planning to depart as soon as everyone arrives, so please be prompt.

On Friday night the Scouts and adults will be traveling to Camp Oyo, a Boy Scout Camp near Portsmouth Ohio, where the participants will spend the night in a cabin.

On Saturday morning, we’ll load up with the gear provided by the outfitter and travel up the Scioto river to about Piketon, where we will put in the canoes for the trip down the river.

The Scouts and adults will stop for lunch along the way and stop short of the Ohio River at an established camping area (one that the outfitter has used before) along the Scioto River. The participants will  have dinner and camp in tents overnight.

On Sunday morning the Troop will pack up and put back into the river and travel the few remaining miles down to the point at which the canoes come out of the river.

The Troop will travel back to Columbus, arriving back at the Church at about 1PM.

The outfitter is providing much of the gear for the outing, so Scouts (and adults) need to bring

Mess kit
Water Bottle
Sleeping bag
Sleeping pad
Change of clothing.

The outfitter is providing tents, food, cooking gear, canoes, personal flotation devices, paddles, dry bags for transporting personal gear,  etc.

If you plan to fish, please bring your own fishing gear (rods, tackle, bait, etc.). Anyone planning to fish who is 16 or older needs an Ohio fishing license before we leave.

Please plan to wear closed toe shoes that are firmly attached to your feet. No sandals, no crocks, etc. Dry shoes for camp are a great idea.

Many who are taking part in the outing will be on a tight schedule on Sunday, because Ma’at Ford’s Eagle Court of Honor begins at 2 PM.

Remember that we travel in Class A Uniforms.

Phones and personal electronics for Scouts stay at home.

No food, as the outfitter is providing food.

Plan to eat dinner before arriving at the church at 6 PM.

Here is a list of Scouts and adults scheduled to attend:

How to orient a map

For those Scouts that have not done their ‘how to orient a map requirement’ yet, Backpacker Magazine has an online article that may help you out! (the same is true for those of you that already have this signed off, but have forgotten…)

The link is here: http://www.backpacker.com/skills-how-to-orient-a-map/slideshows/167

You may need to copy and paste it into your browser to make it work.

This is an easy requirement to complete at a regular meeting, so check it out!

Youth Aviation Adventure – May 5

Youth Aviation Adventure, an opportunity to earn the aviation merit badge, happens on May 5 (next Saturday). All Scouts aged 12 to 18  are eligible top take part.

If you plan to take advantage of this opportunity, please let me know so that I can find a coordinator.

Many Scouts from our Troop have taken advantage of this fun, outdoor opportunity to discover the world of aviation and earn the aviation merit badge.

More information about the program (which only costs $5) is available here: http://www.youthaviationadventure.org/yaa/

Again, please let me know if you plan to attend the program (conducted at the OSU Airport near Dublin).

April Outing – Ziplining

Just a few reminders for those attending the Ziplining outing this weekend.

We will meet at the church  at 6 PM on Friday, April 13. You should have dinner before you arrive.

We will be traveling to Camp Friedlander (Loveland, OH – about 2 hours away) where we will be tent camping overnight.

We will be camping and cooking by patrols. Scouts attending should already know what patrol they are in and who they are sharing a tent with. Adults are welcome to tent alone. If anyone needs to borrow a tent, please let me know and I will find one for you.

On Saturday morning we will travel to Camp Kern, the Dayton area YMCA Camp, for Ziplining. Remember to dress for the weather and no open-toed shoes.

We’re return  to Camp Friedlander overnight on Saturday night and return to the Church at about noon on Sunday.

Please remember that we travel in Class “A” uniforms and remember to bring your Scout handbook. The handbook provides wonderful lists of what to bring for a camp out. Remember to check the weather and pack (and dress) accordingly.

We cook and eat together as a group, so no food or drinks unless you are the Scout buying food for the group. Remember to bring a water bottle.

Scouts, please leave cell phones, music players and video games at home. You can live without them for a couple of days. Adults have phones for communications.

Please let me or Mrs. Kirschner know if you have questions.

Thanks to Mrs. Kirschner for arranging the details of this outing.

Mr. Fulton.

Easter is just a week and a few days away…

Each year Troop 166 assists the Bexley Recreation and Parks department with the Annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Our participation consists of two events:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the Friday before Easter (Friday, April 6th this year) Scouts gather at the Scoutmasters house (49 N. Merkle Rd) at 6 PM to place about 65 pounds of jelly beans into 1,440 plastic eggs.
The following Scouts are currently on the list to take part:
Noah D.
Liam F.
Jack N.
Bryden G.
William B.
Mason D.
I need at least 2 more Scouts but more are welcome to attend.
Scout uniforms are not required for this event. We should be done by 7:30 PM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On the Saturday before Easter (Saturday, April 7th this year), Scouts gather at 10 AM at Jeffrey Mansion to set up the Easter Egg hunt area, place signage, hide eggs and supervise the hunt areas before the 12 Noon start.

At about 12:03 the Scouts help with the cleanup of the area and store the material for marking the hunt areas for future Easter Egg Hunts.

These Scouts are signed up to help with the Easter Egg Hunt:

Liam F.
Jack N.

I need at least 6 more Scouts to assist with the Easter Egg Hunt, but more are welcome to help.

Scouts participating in the Easter Egg Hunt will need to bin in their Class “A” uniform.

We should be done by 12:30 PM.

Please let me know if you are able to help with this important and very visible event for our Scout troop.

Yours in Scouting,

Mr. Fulton

Congratulations to our Scouts

from The Bexley Communicator (3/6/12)

“Last month, 90 BHS students participated in the American Mathematics Competition. Honors and Advanced Placement math students took the 75-minute, multiple choice AMC 10 and AMC 12 tests, solving non-traditional problems and competing against students across the country. Bexley’s top AMC 10 finishers were freshmen Ian Foreman and Brennan Steele and eighth grader Izadore Keller. The AMC 12 winners were junior Peter Kirschner, senior Adi Ungar and senior Isaac Hecker.”

Congratulations to Peter on this accomplishment.

March Outing – Rockets

For our March outing we will be returning to Camp Birch, located between Dayton and Springfield. We ‘ll be leaving on Friday, March 9 (meeting at the Church at 6PM) and traveling to the camp that evening. We will be staying in a cabin, which has a wood stove for heat.

On Saturday, we’ll be going out in an open field closeby to shoot off rockets that we will build in the Troop meeting on Monday night.  There should also be time for a hike and some advancement tasks.

On Saturday night we may be able to go to Young’s for a bit of the ice cream for which they are so justifibly famous.

We’ll return on Sunday, arriving back at the Church around noon.

Scouts need a sleeping bag, a cup, spoon, and bowl, a change of clothes and personal gear.

The Boy Scout Handbook provides  gear lists for camping  and for outings. There is an extensive, indexed FAQ on the Troop website that addresses many aspects of Scouting and answers many questions (http://troop166.org/FAQ).

Other Scouts and adults often have gear that you can borrow if you need something that you don’t have.

We will be traveling in Class “A” uniforms. This includes Scout shirt, pants, belt and socks.

Watch the weather forecasts for next weekend and dress for being outside all day on Saturday. It’s more difficult to have fun if you are wet or cold.

Do not bring food or snacks, as we cook together as a troop. If Scouts have strong food preferences or dislikes, they need to be addressed in the planning for the outing. The Scouts plan their own menus, shop for food and cook their own meals.

Please let me know about any food allergies or dietary restrictions.

Personal electronics, cell phones, and electronic games should be left at home. This is a time for being unplugged. Adults have cell phones for emergencies.

The cost for youth is $30. Please bring some extra money for Young’s on Saturday evening.

A permission form is available on the website (http://troop166.org/web-forms/)  and I will have copies in the parking lot.

I will also need adults to drive and to supervise. Adults are always welcome and encouraged to come and observe.

Please let me know if there are questions or concerns .

Video Games that I Like

I complain loudly and often about the amount of time that is wasted playing video games.

I’ve found some that I like and thought that I should pass along the link. They present interesting problems that are fun to solve and build upon each other.

They are not (in my humble opinion) a waste of time.

http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/onlinestuff/games.aspx

The Science Museum website has lots of fun and interesting stuff and the Museum itself is wonderful, if you should find yourself in London.

Thanks to one of my favorite blogs ( Tales From a 21st Century Teacher ) for this resource.
