“Thank You” Note

We received a “Thank You” that I wanted to  share.

“Dear Troop 166,

“Thank you all so much for your time, effort, and support of the Bexley Rec. and Parks Campout. We have received such wonderful feedback on the event in large part because of the work of Troop 166. A number of families have expressed to us their

appreciation for all your help with tent set-up, campfire supervision and education, help with the meals and everything else.

Once again, on behalf of the BRPD and the Bexley community, thank you all for your assistance with the camp out. You all helped make this a special experience for so many families.

Thanks,

Mike Price”

Backpacking in October

As all  of you know, our backpacking campout is coming up! The cost for this  awesome weekend trip planned for Oct 19-21  will be a mere $20.  Because of the need to get an accurate count of hikers, everyone planning on  attending needs to bring your $20 AND a permission slip to the Scout  meeting on Monday  (Oct 15). If you won’t be able to come to  the meeting (or if you just want to be pro-active), you can also drop it off at  my house, (97 S Dawson Ave) at any time between now and Monday. Permission slips  can be downloaded from the troop website at http://troop166.org/web-forms/   I hate to be a pain, but no $$=no trip.

From  my discussion with the SPL, none of the Scouts needs to borrow any gear  (backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, etc). If this is not correct, please let me  and Peter (pak_2013@yahoo.com) know  ASAP so arrangements can be made.
BTW,  we could also use 1-2 more adults to come so that we have enough cars to stage  water. This a great opportunity to spend a quality weekend in proximity to your  son on a beautiful backpacking trip!

September Troop Outings

September is on the Troop schedule for Climbing.

There are two climbing opportunities for Scouts and Ventures in the next few weeks.

Opportunity 1

Simon Kenton Council will be conducting its Fall Rappelling Clinic on the weekend of September 16-18 (our scheduled outing weekend) for Scout and Adults.

The Council sponsors and conducts two rappelling clinics each year (Spring and Fall), teaching beginning skills and offering participants the opportunity (by attending several clinics) to advance to the Scouting designation of Rappel Master. It requires attendance at 3 or 4 clinics to be eligible to advance to the leadership rank.

One catch: Participants must be 14 by the date of the event and have earned their First Class rank. (Opportunity 2 below includes younger Scouts).

The clinic costs $100 and covers the event, food, and cabin camping at Camp Falling Rock. More information is available here. Registration is through Doubleknot here.

Since this is an event with separate registration and includes food and lodging we will not be conducting this as a troop outing. Register your self as soon as possible if you wish to attend. Space is limited.

Please let me know if you plan to attend so that we can coordinate transportation. There are a number of Scouts that are interested in attending but have other commitments on Friday evening. I understand that some Scouts are planning to come to Camp Failing Rock early on Saturday morning to participate. Again, please let me know so that we can assist with coordinating transportation.

Opportunity 2

For all Scouts (without regard to age) we will be conducting an afternoon outing on Saturday, October 6 leaving at 4PM sharp. We will be meeting at the Church and traveling to Vertical Adventures on the North side of Columbus, we will have a session of climbing from 4:30 until 6:30. We will return back to the church at about 7PM. The outing will cost $20. This will not be a troop weekend outing as another outing (backpacking, woo hoo!) is scheduled for the following weekend). For those who might be interested, the OSU game on that Saturday is not until 8PM.

Please let me know if there are questions and be sure to register for the Rappelling clinic as soon as possible.

Yours in Scouting,

Mr. Fulton

August Troop Outing

Our August outing follows close on the heels of our just-completed July Outing.

Rather than the outing originally planned, the Scouts have elected to visit Camp Birch near Yellow Springs, hike the Clifton Gorge, work on advancement tasks and, of course, eat pie and ice cream.

We are on a short schedule so commitments will have to be made by the next Troop meeting on Monday, August 6.

• Dates: August 10-12
• Departure : TBD on Friday, August 10
• Returning: About noon on Sunday, Aug. 12
• Destination: Camp Birch, Yellow Springs, OH
• Cost: $30
• Camping: Tents
• Gear: Boy Scout handbook, water bottle, tent (or plan to share a tent), flashlight, sunscreen, other items for outing from Boy Scout Handbook
• Must know by: Monday Aug. 6 at Troop Meeting
• Minimum number of Scouts: 6
• Activities: Camping, cooking, hiking (not backpacking), advancement tasks
• Travel: In Class “A” Uniform
• Friday Dinner: Eat at home before departure

I’ll also need an adult or two to drive and help with supervision

Please let me know if there are questions.

July Troop Outing

Our July Troop Outing is planned as a weekend camping trip near the shore of Lake Erie with a visit to Cedar Point Amusement Park.

We will meet at Church on Friday, July 27 in the late afternoon (time to be determined).

We’ll travel to East Harbor State Park at Marblehead and spend the night in tents.

After breakfast the next morning, we’ll travel the short distance to Cedar Point Amusement Park where we will spend the day. Lunch will be at the park.

We’ll return to the state park for the evening and dinner. On Sunday morning we’ll return to Columbus, planing to reach the Church at about noon.

I’ve broken down the $80 total cost of the trip:

  • Travel                         $8.00
  • Food                           $8.00
  • Camping                     $6.00
  • Cedar Point               $45.00
  • Saturday lunch          $11.00
  • Cedar Point Parking    $2.00
  • Cost per Scout          $80.00

We  will need commitments and payments from Scouts by the next Troop meeting, 7/16/12.

If you are not available for the next troop meeting, you will need to commit and pay in advance of the troop meeting.

We need a minimum of 6 scouts committed and paid by next Monday to make this trip happen.

Since I will be away at Seabase next week (7/16 – 7/22), please communicate with Mrs. Kirschner if you have questions.

Yours in Scouting,

Mr. Fulton

Planning for Summer Camp

For Scouts attending their second or third (or fourth or fifth) year of summer camp, here is a list of the requirements for the merit badges that they may chose to work on this summer.
