January Outing

Click here to signup for outing!

Our January outing will fall right at the end of the month and will kick off a rich set of Scouting opportunities for February.

We’ll meet at the Church at 6 PM on Friday, January 31 and travel to Camp Falling Rock just north of Newark for a weekend of fun. After settling into our cabin and an evening snack, we’ll spend the night. On Saturday morning after breakfast and cleanup, we’ll spend most of the day outside with games, Scout skills and learning to build improvised emergency shelters. I’m assuming that Scouts will plan a hot lunch in the cabin. I know that the adults will. Saturday evening after dinner and cleanup, we’ll spend the night in the cabin, except for the hearty few who may elect (under supervision) to spend the night in their improvised shelters. On Sunday we’ll have breakfast, cleanup and return to Bexley, Arriving back at the church at about 11 AM.

Scouts should have dinner prior to arrival at the Church on Friday.

We cook and eat by patrols, so only those cooking should be bringing food.

All phones and electronics should be left at home. Adults will have phones for an emergency.

We will need adults to drive and to take part in the outing.

Our November Troop outing will be November 15, 16 & 17 .

On Friday the 15th, the troop will assemble at the Church and travel to Camp Birch Boy Scout Camp at Yellow Springs where we will be staying in a cabin.

The next morning we’ll cook breakfast, clean up and then set out to hike the Clifton Gorge, eating lunch along the way. Our destination will be Clifton Mill in Clifton for the traditional mid-hike piece of pie. We’ll hike back to Camp Birch and spend the rest of the afternoon working on requirements and perhaps getting a well deserved nap.  After cooking dinner and cleaning up, we’ll spend the night in the cabin, but not until we have made a brief trip to Young’s for some of the best ice cream around,

On Sunday morning, we’ll pack up, clean up and return to the Church at about noon.

Cost for the outing will be $40, which includes the cost of the cabin and the cost of pie and ice cream.

Please don’t bring food unless you are the designated cook for the Troop.

Personal electronics (including cell phones) stay at home. Adults will have cell phones for emergencies.

Watch the weather forecast and dress for the weather – we will be outside for much of the day on Saturday.

Adult Leader Training

From time to time, the question arises about what training is required for adults to become trained as Assistant Scoutmasters or Troop Committee members.
Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters are considered trained when they have completed:

  • Youth Protection Training (online)  <==  RECOMMENDED FOR ALL PARENTS
  • This Is Scouting (was New Leader Essentials) (online)
  • Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, (classroom)
  • Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (classroom)

(courses  are offered individually or through leader training programs (usually two weekends) like Green Bar, Blackfoot, or Rivermen)

Troop Committee members are considered trained when they have completed:

  • Youth Protection Training (online)
  • This Is Scouting (online)
  • Troop Committee Challenge as their leader-specific training (online)

Online training is available at http://myscouting.org (eLearning –> Boy Scout)

Classroom training appears on the schedule at http:/skcbsa.org (Events –> Training –> Adult Training or Calendar)

As always, please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

October Backpacking Outing

Scouts, adult participants, and drivers: please sign up at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/9040E4CADA62EAB9-october

The Troop tries to go backpacking at least once a year and this year the Scouts have chosen October as our backpacking outing. We will meet a the Church at 5:30 on Friday, October 4.

Scouts should have dinner prior to arriving at the Church on Friday. Please leave electronics and phones at home. You do not need them. Adults will have phones for emergencies.

Scouts should arrive with backpacks packed and ready for the outing and in clothing ready to backpack (uniforms not required).

As soon are we are all present and ready, we’ll leave for Dayton, where we will be camping overnight after a snack.

On Saturday morning after breakfast, we will be backpacking on a relatively easy trail that is a part of the Dayton Metro Parks System. We will have lunch on the trail or at the conclusion the hike, depending on starting time and the speed of the group.

After hiking we will set up camp and have dinner and spend the night. On Sunday, we pack up, clean up and return to the Church at about noon.

As the food and cooking for backpacking is somewhat specialized, the adults will coordinate the food with assistance form the Scouts for cooking. Do not bring any food or anyhting that smells like food in your backpack.

Each pair of Scouts will need a tent suitable for backpacking. Each Scout will need a backpack, sleeping bag, pad and personal gear. The trail is not difficult so boots are not a requirement, but an extra pair of shoes and dry socks are critical elements of the Scout’s gear. Scouts or adults who wish to participate but lack gear should contact Mr. Kirschner or Mr. Fulton for assistance in arranging gear.

Gear will be coordinated at the Monday Troop Meeting prior to the outing.

Cost of the outing will be $15. Please pay by the end of the Troop Meeting on Monday evening.

Scouts, adult participants, and drivers: please sign up at www.SignUpGenius.com/go/9040E4CADA62EAB9-october

Please contact Mr. Kirschner (lawrence.kirschner@osumc.edu) or myself with questions.
