Info for May Troop Outing

Greetings,

For our May Troop outing the Scouts have chosen Cedar Point (CP) as our destination.

We will gathering at the Church on Friday, May 17 at 6:00 PM to pack up and get underway.

Scouts should have dinner before arriving at the Church.

We travel to and from outings in full class “A” uniforms (shirt, belt, pants and socks).

Electronics and cell phones should be left at home.

We cook and eat as a Troop, so all food and snacks will be purchased and brought by the Scouts designated to do so. No food packed in personal gear. No food in tents.

We will be traveling to East Harbor State Park where we will be staying in the group camping area.  The Scouts will have a snack before turning in for the evening.

We will be sleeping in tents.

On Saturday morning Scouts will cook breakfast, clean up, and then we will  travel the short distance to CP where will will stay until the early afternoon. Scout and adults will purchase lunch in the park, so please plan to bring money for that purpose.

Scouts will be in the park in small groups and will be required to stay together. They will be required to check in with adult leadership during the day at fixed intervals.

After CP, we will return to the State Park. Scouts will prepare dinner and clean up and we will spend the night in tents.

On Sunday morning after breakfast and cleanup, we will depart the State Park, arriving back at the Church at about noon.

The cost for the outing will be $75 and I must have money for the outing by the end of the Scout meeting on Monday, May 13.  If we are able to secure additional discounts, we will refund the savings to participants. We will not know the amount of discounts until after the tickets to CP are purchased (after Monday evening).

The cost covers camping, food for the outing, and park admissions. It does not cover the cost of lunch or other food in CP on Saturday.

The weather is variable this time of year. It’s important to pay attention to weather forecasts and dress to be outside  for most of the day on Saturday.

Sunscreen is important.

Here is a list of Scouts that have committed to attend. If this is is not correct or not complete, please let me know as soon as possible.

Northern Tier 2014 Organizational Meeting!

As promised, we are going to start planning for our 2014 High Adventure Trip to Northern Tier.

The informational and organizational meeting will be on Sunday, March 3, at 12:30 at the church. Eligible Scouts and their parents are encouraged to come and learn about this awesome High Adventure trip. The trip is open to both Scouts and parents, and this is a terrific opportunity to see Scouting in action while enjoying the beautiful northern wilderness.

At the meeting, we will be discussing everything you might want to know about Northern Tier trips:

  • cost
  • gear
  • time commitment
  • crew composition
  • passports
  • etc.

and answering any questions.

I would like to collect deposits ($50 per person) at the meeting for those that are definitely interested. We will not finalize the crew, but the sooner we send our money the more likely it is that we will get the trip we want.

Important note: Northern Tier recently changed their eligibility requirements!  The new requirement is that you must be 14 by the time we leave for the trip OR be 13 and have completed 8th grade. This is different than what I have previously said, but this is a BSA Nat’l policy, so I don’t have any say in it.

I will be mentioning this at upcoming Troop meetings, but feel free to call or email me as well.

Winter Klondike: Update

1) We need help.

The updated list of participants is provided below (with 14 Scouts) and we’ll need 2 additional adults to drive or (more likely)  come with us (staying in a cabin) for the Klondike. Al least one of the additional vehicles needs to be a van/minivan.

Please let me know if you are able to help and whether you are able to drive one way or spend the weekend with us. It’s a 3 hour drive to our destination. We leave at 6 PM on Friday (1/25) and return at noon on Sunday (1/27)

2) Participants

Here’s the update list of participants. If this is not correct, please let me know quickly.

3) Gear

The Boy Scout Handbook continues to be a great source of information about what’s needed on a camp-out. I am often surprised at how many Scouts forget the basics (flashlight, water bottle, mess kit) even after they have been on several outings. Don’t be that Scout.

We will be outdoors for all day on Saturday with a predicted temperature range of 19 to 27 degrees. The good news? We’re likely to have show on the ground. I would suggest boots, two or three non-cotton layers on he lower body (I will be wearing silk or polypropylene as a base layer, quick dry pants and my ski pants), and layers on the upper body (I’ll be wearing a quick dry tee shirt, quick dry shirt, synthetic fleece and a medium weight jacket. Hat and gloves are a must.

There are lots of sources for outdoor gear, but my online orders to Campmor always seem to arrive within two days. I’m not providing an endorsement, just relating my experience.

I’ve posted the earlier email with details of the outing to the troop website (http://troop166.org) so please take a look there for more information. As always, if you have questions, please ask.

Here is the Leader Guide for the outing with details of the activities: Leader Guide

This should be a great trip. Many thanks to Mr. Lonergan and to Mr. and Mrs. Kirschner for their help in coordinating this outing.

Scout Klondike

The Glacier Ridge District of the Greater Cleveland Council in northeast Ohio holds its Winter Klondike at the end of January each year.

We attended last year for the first time and had a great time, so we’re going to cross our finders, hope for snow and take off for Rock Creek, Ohio. That’s the location of Beaumont Scout Reservation, about 40 miles east of Cleveland (a 3 hour drive from Bexley).

We’ll meet at the Church on Friday, January 25 at 6PM and head to Camp Beaumont. We’ll spend the night in a cabin (with gas heat)  and get up early to participate in a full day of competitions with other Scout Troops in Scout related events. We plan to be out in the weather all day on Saturday, so look at a weather forecast and pack appropriately. It’s likely to be snowy or muddy, so boots are a good idea. Sunday evening there is an event for all the troops that are taking part in the Klondike.

Sunday morning we’ll clean up and return to Bexley, arriving around noon.

Cost for the outing will be $30 (food, cabin, and participation fee for the Klondike) and is due on Monday (this Monday 1/14 at the Troop meeting) . Monday is our last Troop meeting prior to the outing, as there is no meeting on Monday Jan. 21 because of the school holiday

We will also need one or two other adults to drive and/or spend the weekend with us.

Here are the Scouts that I believe are attending:

Elijah C.
Noah D.
Bryden G.
Ian H.
Nick L (Maybe)
Jack N.
James RS (Maybe)
Eddie R
Ben R
Casey S.

PLEASE CHECK THE LIST AND LET ME KNOW IF THERE ARE ADDITIONS, DELETIONS, OR CHANGES.

Also let me know if there are questions.

Yours in Scouting,

Mr. Fulton
