Kanik: Philmont’s Cold-Weather Camping Program

Kanik Patch

“Kanik” is the Inuit word for “snowflake.”

Cold-weather camping is the ultimate test of your ability to camp and travel in the backcountry and learn to live in harmony with the environment. Training in winter camping will prepare you to safely enjoy many winter adventures and to teach others to enjoy these unique experiences.

Participants in Kanik learn to camp comfortably in cold weather, and enjoy Philmont’s beauty in winter. Crews hike through the backcountry, sleep in tents or snow shelters, and participate in activities such as ski touring, snow shelter building, and winter ecology.

Holiday Kanik is scheduled for December 28th – 31, 2009. Space is limited, and each season fills up quickly, so we need to make reservations as soon as possible!

What Is the Cost?

The program cost is $125 per person, which includes meals, snacks, instruction, staff, and the use of special outdoor equipment, sleeping bags, and outer clothing as needed.

Additional expenses including travel to and from Philmont are currently estimated at $450.  Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Travel potentially may involve taking the train from Chicago, leaving early Dec. 26th,  and returning Jan. 2nd.  Cross-country train travel is an adventure as well!

What’s next?

There will be an organizational meeting next Monday, Nov. 23rd at 7 p.m., just before the troop meeting.  Bring a check for $50 made out to Troop 166.  It will be refunded if we are unable to make reservations to go.

Mr. Lonergan will be coordinating this outing.

More details here.

November Troop Outing

Our troop outing for November will be November 13 – 15 at Chief Logan Reservation, near Chillicothe, OH.

In addition to working on advancement and skills development, the outing will provide an opportunity to play “Cat and Mouse”, a map and compass game.

The cost for the outing will be $18.

We will meet at the church on Friday, November 13 at 6 PM.

This outing is cabin camping so no tents are needed, but we will be outdoors for most of the day on Saturday. Plan for the weather.

Mr. Taylor, Mr. Kirschner and perhaps Ms. Ford will be joining me on the outing as adult leaders. Thanks to all for their consideration.

Tips for Winter Outings

  • Dress in layers
  • Wear synthetic material, wool or silk – not cotton. Never cotton.
  • Bring multiple layers of socks
  • Bring a hat. Bring two hats.
  • Bring gloves. Bring Mittens
  • Bring boots. You will be outside for long periods of time and your feet need to be warm and dry.
  • Bring extra cloths, in case some thing gets wet. You might need extra cloths to sleep in
  • Bring your best (warmest)sleeping bag and an extra blanket.
  • Expect rain AND cold, just in case. Rain gear traps a layer of warm air close to your body and can act as a windbreaker
  • Pack your clothes in zip lock bags to keep them dry no matter what.
  • Bring a small backpack (day pack) to carry your extra gear.
  • Bring a water bottle (bring an extra water bottle). It’s easy to get dehydrated in cold weather.
  • If you have a Camelback or Platypus, bring it and a water bottle.

October Outing

Scouts prepare to get underway on a recent outing.

Scouts prepare to get underway on a recent outing.

In October we will be biking off into the distance and working on some requirements for the Biking Merit Badge.

On Friday, October 16 at 4:45 we will be meeting at Bexley United Methodist Church and loading up the Troop trailer with our bicycles to leave for Camp Birch in Springfield, OH.

We will be leaving by 5:30.

The cost for the outing will be $17.

We’ll spend the night tent camping and then during the day on Saturday we will explore the bike trails of Clifton Gorge and Yellow Springs.

The weather prediction is for below freezing weather on the weekend of the camp out. We will be outdoors for most of the day and camping in tents overnight. It many be early in the season, but we need to dress carefully to avoid cold weather dangers. Please see the “Tips for Winter Outings” article.
