October Scoutmaster Minute

Sometime, shorts and a tee shirt are not the correct attire for whitewater rafting

Sometime, shorts and a tee shirt are not the correct atier for whitewater rafting

Some people hate the fall. The turning of the leaves and the cooling temperatures causes them to long for the lush greens and long, warm days of summer.

I’m not one of those people. I think that one of the great things about being here in Ohio is the dramatic differences in weather between the seasons.

Last weekend, I went whitewater rafting in West Virginia and needed to be dressed as you see here. I was mostly warm enough. I was vividly reminded of our Troop trip this summer to Ohiopyle when we sweated in our shorts and tee shirts.

What a difference a few weeks can make.

One of the reasons that we do outdoor activities year-round is to show by example that the outdoors can be enjoyed in any weather. There’s no reason to be cooped up inside, just because the weather is different. As the old saying goes, “There’s no bad weather, only bad gear.”

Congratulation to our Scouts who have begun their meetings and planning for next Summer’s Jamboree:

  • Chris Bruegge
  • Nick Ellison
  • Eli Feuer
  • Ma’at Ford
  • Peter Kirschner
  • Daniel Lee

In addition, Mr and Mrs. Kirschner and myself will be attending Jamboree in various roles. Our Jamboree Troop has it’s own web site (troop1411.com) for information, forms and updates. While all the slots for Scouts are currently full, the Council is accepting applications (and payment) for Scouts onto the waiting list. It is likely that some slots will become available between now and next July. Scouts must be First Class, be 12 to 18 years old, and have the recommendation of their Scoutmaster to attend.

As always, I welcome your questions, comments and suggestions.

Get Email Notices of Updates

One of the challenges of a newsletter in the form of a blog is answering the question “How do I know when the information on the blog changes? Surely you don’t expect me to remember to look at the web page every day or every week?”

A little while back, I found a very convenient tool that I’ve used successfully from a company named ChangeDetection.com

At the bottom of this page is a box labeled “Be Notified of Page Updates”. If you enter your email there and follow a couple of steps, ChangeDetection.com will send you an email each time that this blog changes. You can control how often messages are sent (once a day, once a week, etc) and each message that you get provides links to delete the setup (stop getting messages) or to make changes.

Please contact me with questions.

New Images of Outings and Events

Leaving Mr. Fulton Behind

I’ve posted several sets of new images in our Google Picasa gallery and on our YouTube channel.

The images are uploaded at high quality and are suitable for downloading and printing/sharing.

If you have any problems accessing them, please let me know and I can help.

Also, if you have images from outings or events and would like to share with others in our Scouting community, please get them to me or let me know.

Thanks,

John Fulton

Harvest Festival

On Friday, October 9 we will be taking part in the Annual Bexley Harvest Festival hosted by Bexley Parks and Recreation at Jeffery Mansion between 6 PM and 8 PM.

There is no Bexley football game that evening.

We will be selling hot drinks and possibly other goodies to raise money for the Troop and for individual Scout accounts.

Scout volunteers are needed for the event and can earn service hours or money for their Scout account.

Contact Mr. Fulton or Mrs. Kirschner if you have questions.

Welcome to the new Troop 166 Newsletter

I’ve been casting about for a way to improve on the flow of information that’s available to Scouts and parents and Adult leaders for our Troop.

This is my next attempt.

Rather than producing a monthly newsletter I’ll be posting information here and provide reminders via email to let you know when new information is posted.

I’ll also be encouraging other adult leaders and parents and Scouts to post information here.

This lets the adult leaders and committee members update information sooner and keep the information available up-to-date .

The blog format will also proved everyone a way to post comments and feedback.

I need to find a way to provide this information to the members of our community who are limited in their ability to access the Internet.  It’s a significant challenge and I welcome suggestions on how to make sure no one is excluded.

If you have problems or questions, please let me know.
