Troop Elections

It’s been over 6 months and the time has arrived for Troop elections for Senior Patrol Leader.

We’ll be conducting an election at the first meeting after our November outing, Monday November 21.

As a reminder, only the Patrol Leaders and Senior Patrol Leaders are elected – other positions are appointed.

Please plan to attend our next 3 troop meeting when we plan for Pumpkin Chucking and then elect our new Patrol and Senior Patrol Leaders.

There are plenty of leadership positions available (not just the key 4), so please step forward and help the Troop as we grow.

Please let me know if there are questions.

Mr. Fulton

Program planning guide for 2012

We’re a few weeks way (and we need to do Pumpkin Chucking first – Woo Hoo!) but it’s almost time to plan for 2012. Simon Kenton Council has issued a guide and Program Planning Calendar, which will be one of our sources.

If you are aware of programs, opportunities, potential conflicts or other considerations for our 2012 year of Scouting, please start gathering those together for our December planning session on December 9 – 10.

October Outing – Clifton Gorge

The weekend of October 14 – 16 will be a busy one.

We’re breaking with tradition and spending the evening of Friday, October 14 in Bexley so that we can participate in the annual Harvest Festival. Sign-up sheets will be at Troop meetings. Mr. Wuellner and Ms. Gunn will be coordinating.

At 8 AM Saturday morning  Oct. 15,  we’ll meet at the church (having eaten breakfast at home) to depart for Camp Birch near Yellow Springs. Once we have set up camp (we will be tent camping) we’ll spend the day hiking in the gorge and visiting Clifton Mill.

There will be time to work on advancement  skills, so please bring your Scout Handbook.

We will be out in the weather (hiking and sleeping in tents) so pay attention to the weather. It can be warm in October. It can snow in October. The weather is likely to be somewhere in between.

Cost of the trip will be $20. Please bring a few dollars of extra money in case we’re able to go for ice cream at Young’s Dairy on Saturday night.

I’ll need a couple of adults with current Youth Protection Training to drive and come with us for the outing.

Here is a list of those currently planning to attend. Please let me know if this list changes (if you plan to attend and you’re not on the list — or if you are on the list and plan to not attend)

Youth Protection Training

Adult Volunteers (all registered adults including committee members) can only be registered if they are current with BSA’s Youth Protection Training (YPT). Since we will be rechartering soon, now is a good time to check your training records (http://myscouting.org/). YPT must be retaken every two years. For more information on the policy, there is an  FAQ and a policy statement.

September Outing – Put In Bay

For our September outing, we’ll be traveling to lovely Lake Erie and visiting South Bass Island and Put-in-Bay.

We’ll be leaving on Friday, September 9th at 6:00 PM and traveling to East Harbor State Park where we will be camping in tents.

We will travel, as always, in Class “A” uniforms.

Our outing is scheduled to coincide with a Camporall sponsored by Troop 360 of Port Clinton. Many special activities and events are scheduled for Scouts during this weekend.

On Saturday morning, we’ll be traveling to South Bass Island to take part in several activities.

At the end of the day, we’ll be returning to the mainland to spend the night in the state park.

We will return to the Church, arriving at about 12:30 on Sunday.

The cost of the trip is $55 (camping, food, ferry, bike rental, admissions, gas reimbursement) and is payable at the Church when we leave. I’ll bring permission slips to sign also.

Scouts and adults will need the usual gear for tent camping and some spare money for the wide variety of food that is available on the island.

I will need at least one other adult to attend and perhaps some extra drivers (depending on the number of Scouts.

Here is the list of Scouts that I believe to be attending ( the “??” indicates that there was an expression of interest, but no commitment – please confirm):

  • Liam F.
  • Michael R.
  • Casey S.
  • Nate T. ??
  • Nick E. ??
  • James P. ??
  • Zach G. ??
  • Mr. Fulton
  • Mr. Flanigan

We need a minimum of 6 for the outing to take place. I’ll make a “go/no go” decision on Monday, 9/5/11

Questions? Please let me know.

August Outing – Whitewater Rafting

For our August outing, we’ll be traveling to the Lower New River in West Virginia for an afternoon of whitewater rafting.

On Friday, August 19, 2011 we’ll be leaving BUMC (meeting at 5 PM, departing as soon as we’re packed and ready) and driving about 4 hours to Babcock Start Park (http://www.babcocksp.com/ ) near Clifftop, WV where we will be camping in tents.

We have 15 participants and 8 tent sites, so plan to share a tent.

We will stop along the way to eat a brown bag dinner that Scouts and adults will bring with them.

On the way to and from the outing, Scouts may make user of personal electronic devices. They will be left in the vehicle at the campsite.

After morning at the campsite, we’ll travel the 30 miles to Oak Hill, WV and Ace Adventures (http://www.aceraft.com/ ), our outfitter for the trip. We’ll leave about 1 pm for the outfitter and then spend the afternoon on the river.

Afterwards, we’ll return to the campsite for the evening.

On Sunday morning, we’ll pack up and drive back to Bexley, arriving at about 1 or 2 PM. Scouts and adults should bring cash for a snack or lunch along the way.

Scouts must be at least 11 years old and at least 56” (4’ 8”) in height (outfitters rules, not our rules).

The outfitter will be providing all equipment for rafting, including helmets and personal flotation devices which will be worn at all times on the water.

See the outfitter’s website for some good tips on what to expect (What Should I Bring? What Should I Wear? What if the Weather is Bad? – http://www.aceraft.com/faq.html ).

The cost for adults and Scouts will be $135 per person. A payment of $50 is due by next Monday (July 25, 2011) to hold your spot.  Payment in full is due at or before the August 15 Troop meeting. Checks should be payable to “Troop 166”.

In addition to our troop permission slip (http://goo.gl/R4jWw) each participant will need to complete a release form from the outfitter (http://goo.gl/KEmRV )

July Outing

For our July outing for the Troop outing (Friday July . 15 – Sunday July 17) we’ll be traveling to John Bryan State Park near Springfield and tent camping. We’ll meet at the Church on Friday (time to be determined) and travel to the camp. On Saturday we’ll be walking in the Clifton Gorge in search of the ever-elusive piece of pie at Clifton Mill

There will be time to work on requirements, so Scouts should be sure to bring their Scout Handbook.

We’ll be outdoors all weekend, so watch the weather. Spare, dry clothes are always good idea.

On Sunday, we’ll be return to the Church at about 12:30.

The cost of the outing will be $25. Participants may want to bring some extra money for a potential trip on Saturday evening to Young’s Ice Cream.

The Scout Handbook provides a wonderful list of what should be packed for a Scout outing.

As a reminder, we travel to and from outing in our Class “A” uniform.

Please let me know if there are questions issues or concerns.

Summer Camp

Summer camp is fast approaching.  I wanted to remind all scouts and their parents of a few things:

1 – We will be meeting at the church on Sunday at 12:30 pm.

2 – Scouts can check their handbook for a detailed list of what to bring to camp but some specifics include:

  • flashlight
  • sleeping bag
  • tarp
  • shoes that can get wet
  • bathing suit and towel
  • shower stuff (shampoo, soap, shower shoes and towel)
  • water bottle
  • sun screen
  • class A uniform (this includes: shirt, shorts or pants, socks, and belt) You should wear this on Sunday as we travel in class A
  • personal first aid kit
  • scout handbook
  • money for trading post ($20 to $30 should do it – more if you are participating in an activity with a fee; less if you don’t want to buy a CFR t-shirt)
  • Medications (prescription and non) (Please give to Mr. Fulton or myself at the church!!!)
  • deck of cards for Euchre!!!!!!

3 – Do not bring: food, cell phones, i-pods, any other electronics.  We will collecting all of the above at the church and giving them back to your parents (or holding them in our cars until we return to the church on Saturday).

4 – Our expected return to the church is 11:30am/12 noon on Saturday.  Scouts must unload and put away the gear once we arrive at the church.

If there are any last minute questions, please do not hesitate to contact either me or Mr. Fulton.  I can be reached at this email address or 614-323-0199.

We are looking forward to a fantastic time and the weather looks clear for the first few days of camp!

Mrs. Kirschner
