May 2012 Troop Outing – Canoeing and Fishing

Our next outing is coming up this weekend and we seem to have most of the details ironed out.

The Troop will meet at the church on this Friday, May 18 at 6 PM, planning to depart as soon as everyone arrives, so please be prompt.

On Friday night the Scouts and adults will be traveling to Camp Oyo, a Boy Scout Camp near Portsmouth Ohio, where the participants will spend the night in a cabin.

On Saturday morning, we’ll load up with the gear provided by the outfitter and travel up the Scioto river to about Piketon, where we will put in the canoes for the trip down the river.

The Scouts and adults will stop for lunch along the way and stop short of the Ohio River at an established camping area (one that the outfitter has used before) along the Scioto River. The participants will  have dinner and camp in tents overnight.

On Sunday morning the Troop will pack up and put back into the river and travel the few remaining miles down to the point at which the canoes come out of the river.

The Troop will travel back to Columbus, arriving back at the Church at about 1PM.

The outfitter is providing much of the gear for the outing, so Scouts (and adults) need to bring

Mess kit
Water Bottle
Sleeping bag
Sleeping pad
Change of clothing.

The outfitter is providing tents, food, cooking gear, canoes, personal flotation devices, paddles, dry bags for transporting personal gear,  etc.

If you plan to fish, please bring your own fishing gear (rods, tackle, bait, etc.). Anyone planning to fish who is 16 or older needs an Ohio fishing license before we leave.

Please plan to wear closed toe shoes that are firmly attached to your feet. No sandals, no crocks, etc. Dry shoes for camp are a great idea.

Many who are taking part in the outing will be on a tight schedule on Sunday, because Ma’at Ford’s Eagle Court of Honor begins at 2 PM.

Remember that we travel in Class A Uniforms.

Phones and personal electronics for Scouts stay at home.

No food, as the outfitter is providing food.

Plan to eat dinner before arriving at the church at 6 PM.
