May Troop Outing

Our next Troop 166 outing will be BACKPACKING the weekend of May 20-22. Although there are a hardy group of Scouts (and adults) preparing for Philmont this summer, the Troop backpacking trip is suitable for Scouts of all ages and experience!  As Mr Fulton said in his Scoutmaster minute on Monday, backpacking is a great opportunity to put your Scout skills to use. If you aren’t confident in your skills, this will be a great chance to build them!

Details:
We will hiking the Logan Trail, which is located at the Tar Hollow State Park. If you have been to Tar Hollow with the school, you will have a COMPLETELY different (and better!) experience hiking the park. We will be driving down Friday night and setting up camp. On Saturday, we will strike camp, load everything into our backpacks, and hike about 6 miles to our new camp, where we will set up camp and stay the night (nap is optional).

For any energetic Scouts, we will have the option to complete the loop back to our original campsite–a total distance of about 10 miles. This can be done with or without carrying your backpack–it will be Scout’s choice. Anyone that hikes the 10 mile loop will receive a special Logan Trail patch. Sunday morning, we will pack up and come home (although it is quite possible we may find ourselves at Sonic between Tar Hollow and home).

Important stuff:

1.  Our excellent Key 4 will be discussing skills needed for backpacking at the next 2 meetings–please come so you can learn what to pack and how to do it.

2.  If there is any anyone that would like to come but does not have a backpack and/or a tent: These items can be borrowed from the Adult leaders or other Scouts. If you want to come–we will find gear for you!!! However, you must let the SPL or the Scoutmaster know so we can get you the proper gear. In other words, please DO NOT rush out and buy backpacking gear!!! Talk to us first and we will help you.

3.  Backpacking is an excellent activity not just for Scouts, but for adults as well. All parents are invited to join us on this trip. Scouts–get your parents to come, and you can watch them struggle to walk 6 miles! Any adult needing gear is welcome to borrow as well.

4. Cost of the trip: $20. This will cover everything EXCEPT Sonic. Bring an extra ~5 bucks if you think you might want something there (highly recommended!) Bring your $20 to the meeting this coming Monday.

5. We need to know how many people are going on the trip. Please come on Monday (with your $20) and let the SPL or Scoutmaster know you will be coming (includes adults). If you cannot attend the meeting but will come backpacking, let us know ASAP.

6. Our excellent Key 4 will be discussing skills needed for backpacking at the next 2 meetings–please come so you can learn what to pack and how to do it.
